To Be Continued:

Continuing the Work of Acts Through Church Planting & Revitalization

Most of us have experienced the moment when a movie or television episode fades to black and the words appear on the screen: “To be continued.” 

Those three words create anticipation. They remind us that the story is not finished. The tension has not been resolved, and what we have just watched is only part of a much larger narrative.

In many ways, the Book of Acts begins with that same feeling. Luke opens his second volume with these words: “In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach...” (Acts 1:1).

That single word—began—is incredibly important. It tells us that the Gospel of Luke recorded what Jesus started during His earthly ministry. The Book of Acts then reveals how that same work continues through the power of the Holy Spirit and through the lives of believers.

The story of Jesus became the story of the Church.

The Ministry Continues 

Acts reminds us that Christianity is not simply a belief system or a historical memory. It is a living movement. The risen Christ continues His work in the world through His people.

One of the most fascinating features of the Book of Acts is that it does not end with a tidy conclusion. The narrative simply stops, while the mission continues. The Gospel is still advancing. The church is still growing. Lives are still being transformed.

In many ways, the final chapter of Acts has not yet been written. We are living in the continuation of that story. God is still calling leaders to plant churches in new communities. He is still raising up pastors and congregations to revitalize churches that need fresh vision and renewed life. And He is still empowering ordinary believers to carry the message of Jesus to places where hope is desperately needed.  

Acts: The Model for the Church Today

This truth remains incumbent upon us.  The Book of Acts continues to serve as a powerful model for the church to this very day.  It reminds us that the mission of Christ always moves outward. The Gospel was never meant to remain contained within a single community or generation. Instead, it multiplies.

Every time a new church is planted in a growing neighborhood, the story of Acts continues. Every time a congregation experiences renewed vision and spiritual revitalization, the story continues as revitalized churches revitalize their communities. 

A Challenge for Our Generation

God is still writing the story of His church. The same Spirit who empowered the early church is still empowering the church today, and He is calling us all to partner in continuing the work of His church which began in the book of Acts, by expanding the reach & strengthening the impact of His Kingdom; a task specifically targeted through church planting and revitalization, and ministries such as Harvesters.  

The words “to be continued” are not simply a description of the Book of Acts—they are an invitation to continue the mission of Jesus in our generation.  

Will you respond to that invitation? 

• Will we pray for fresh outpourings of the Holy Spirit in our churches?

• Will we invest in planting new congregations that reach communities with the Gospel?

• Will we commit ourselves to revitalizing churches so they can once again become vibrant centers of worship, discipleship, and mission?

• Will we give to Harvesters ministry to support the work of church planting and revitalization to spread the Gospel of Jesus?
